There have been a couple times in my life where I have been completely broke. I’m talking about bank account overdrawn, no idea how I’m going to pay rent broke. I was stressed beyond belief and felt completely hopeless and alone. My life was in disarray and I had to get creative to make some money. Fortunately, I was able to figure out how to make some quick cash and turn my situation around. Here are some things I have done to make money fast in the past. Hold a Firesale

One of the quickest ways to make money fast is to take a look at your possessions and see if there is anything you can part with. Although this isn’t necessarily ideal, you may be surprised at what you have laying around the house. If there are some things that you haven’t used in a long time and that you don’t expect to use in the near future, you may want to consider selling them. There are a few different routes you can take.

First, if you have quite a bit of stuff that you want to get rid of, consider having a garage or yard sale. This can be a great way to make some extra money over the course of a weekend. Put up signs all over your neighborhood advertising the sale. If you have a few bucks to invest in an advertisement in your local community newspaper, that can be an effective way to get the word out about your yard sale. If you don’t have money to spare in advertising, posting an ad on Craigslist can be a great way to get people to your yard sale.

If you don’t have enough items to justify a full blown yard sale, consider selling individual items on Craigslist (http://www.craigslist.org) or eBay (http://www.ebay.com). Both have very large markets of people who are looking to buy used goods. One thing to consider is that eBay will take a little longer to sell because of the auction format. You will need to have a PayPal account to receive the funds and it can take a couple days to transfer the money to your bank account. Craigslist on the other hand is all local, so as soon as somebody is ready to buy what you are selling, you can get cash in hand very quickly.

If you are a business owner who owns a retail store and has excess inventory, you could hold a firesale in the form of a “flash” sale. Let your customers know that for one day only you will be selling certain items for up to 75% off. Plenty of deal seekers will come out to take advantage of the one day sale. Obviously this can hurt long term profits, but if you need to make money fast, this can be another effective way to do it.

Freelance Work

Do you have any special skills that others might need? Maybe you are a gifted writer, or have some graphic design skills. Maybe you are extremely organized and task oriented. Other people are good with kids and enjoy tutoring. No matter what skills you may have (and we all have some), there is usually somebody out there who needs help in your area of expertise.

To find freelance work, go to eLance.com (http://www.elance.com) and start browsing in the different categories that match your skills. There are thousands, even hundreds of thousands, of requests for help posted at any one time. Once you find something that is within your skill set, create an account and bid on the request for help. Once you are approved for the job, it can be as little as 3 days before you get paid. Elance is a great place for getting a freelance job writing articles, creating graphics, even performing virtual assistant jobs. If you have any web design or computer programming skills, there are plenty of those types of jobs posted there as well.

If you are the type of person that enjoys helping people learn, particularly children, Care.com (http://www.care.com) is a great service to sign up with. You register as a contractor and when somebody needs a babysitter, nanny, or tutor, they can hire you from the site. Once you are registered in the database it can be a great way to earn some extra income throughout the month.

Finally, if you want to stay local for performing freelance work, check out the Gigs section of Craigslist. People will post different temporary jobs they are looking to hire for. It can be a great way to make some quick money. You can also place an ad in the services section of Craigslist to have people come to you. This can be useful, but if you are really needing money fast I strongly recommending going out and finding Gigs rather than hoping somebody will find you.

Offer Services to Local Businesses

Local businesses have many needs that regular employees can’t always meet. Whether it is web design, marketing help, or even temporary work during a busy season, it can be very much worth your while to contact some local businesses and offer your services. One thing you can do is take advantage of my “Freebie” offer I have on this blog. Get the mobile website template that I am giving away for free and create a demo version for yourself. Once you have created a demo, approach different types of businesses and let them know that you can make them a mobile website and QR Code to place on their business card. Lawyers are a particularly good market for this. You can sell each template for up to $300, but if you just want to make it a no-brainer for the person, sell it to them for $100. If you can sell 10 a month, that is another $1,000 in your pocket every month.

If you have any internet marketing skills, like SEO knowledge or how to run AdWords campaigns, there are many small businesses who could use your services. It is important to acknowledge that getting small businesses to hire you can be a fairly difficult task if you don’t have any experience in sales. Don’t let this scare you off though. I’ve found the best way to go about it is to compile a list of all businesses in your community who are already advertising. Look in the local paper, yellow pages, Coupon Clippers or other advertisements that come in the mail, and just call up the business and let them know you have some services that can help grow their business and that you want to schedule an appointment to come down and talk to them about it. Don’t try to sell anything over the phone, just sell the appointment. Once you get the appointment to meet with them, you can then go for the close at that time. It can be intimidating calling up businesses, but make a list of 50 to call and then get through that list. No matter how long it takes, don’t give up after the first few calls.

Overall, having to make money fast can be a tough position to be in. It isn’t the end of the world though. The most important thing to remember is to be proactive. It can be very easy to just sit back and feel in a slump. Odds are stacked way against you that something is just going to fall into your lap, so being proactive is really the only way to go out and make money fast. Also remember that times get better.
